Ex-Bay Area priest and child sex abuser Patrick McCabe set free from jail

Friday, March 22, 2013

The former Roman Catholic priest, 77, had been in custody since his extradition from Alameda to Ireland in June, 2011, for sexually molesting boys in Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s. Today a judge handed down a sentence of 18 months, with credit for time served, allowing him to go free.

McCabe worked in churches throughout the Santa Rosa Diocese from 1983 to 1987 before being defrocked. An Irish government report in 2009 found that the church shuffled him to the United States to serve as a priest here despite knowing of sex abuse complaints against him in his native Dublin.
