When the embattled San Francisco housing authority director announced in January that he wouldn’t seek to renew his contract that expires in June—and, oh, by the way, that he would take a personal leave—it may have seemed like the invisible hand of politics at work. Mayor Lee could get out from under an unpopular underling accused of harassment and discriminatory practices and Alvarez could technically stick around long enough to qualify for a pension for life. But try as he might, Alvarez can’t seem to go away quietly.
The Chronicle says his name is listed as the owner of a new restaurant in Berkeley set to open in May. And new Supervisor London Breed is calling for an investigation to determine whether spending personal leave to set up a restaurant, if that’s what he’s doing, constitutes fraud.
