Housing Authority mess:
why the Henry Alvarez story won’t go away

Friday, March 29, 2013

With the embattled San Francisco Housing Authority director coming off medical leave and on a trajectory to exit quietly if he can stick it out to the end of April and qualify for a pension for life, the Chronicle has a (pay-walled) piece about the mess that is the agency’s finances. It’s supposed to run out of money in two months and have a deficit of $6.4 million by the end of the fiscal year in September.

No word on what, if anything, Mayor Lee and his appointees on the housing commission plan to do about Alvarez. He’s rankled sensitivities by using the medical leave to get a new Berkeley restaurant ready to open May 1. That would be the day after his pension vests, if he’s able to hang on to his job that long.
