Michelle Shocked’s anti-gay rant at Yoshi’s—before the lights went out

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

That was a “lights out” second set by alt-folk Grammy nominee Michelle Shocked at Yoshi’s in San Francisco Sunday night. After the East Texas singer, whose real name is Karen Michelle Johnston, inexplicably went on a homophobic rant in which she declared that God hates gay people, roughly two thirds of the audience got up and left and management cut her microphone and literally turned out the lights. Bay Area Reporter, which reconstructs the meltdown, says she was still jabbering as people walked out.

In the aftermath, at least two scheduled Shocked appearances—one in Novato, another in Chicago—have been canceled by management so far.
