With GOP pickings slim, Maldonado says he might challenge Jerry Brown

The state GOP, which wrapped up its convention in Sacramento Sunday, may be $800,000 in debt and with little prospect of finding its way out of the wilderness anytime soon, but at least one former statewide officeholder says he’s thinking of challenging Gov. Jerry Brown in 2014. Former Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado says he’s considering it. Chronicle

His last campaign, against Gavin Newsom, went poorly to say the least. It included one bizarre incident in which Newsom showed up for a small rally at a Los Angeles deli and Maldonado hung around at a back table as a spectator.
