Caltrans: Labor Day Bay Bridge opening—maybe, maybe not

Latest Caltrans position on opening the bad-bolt-plagued east span of the Bay Bridge: It won’t commit to a Labor Day opening until there are answers about why the bolts snapped last month. Yet, Caltrans deputy executive director Andrew B. Fremier tells the media that it will “actively consider” opening the bridge without a fix if it’s determined that the new bridge is safer than the old one. Mercury News
