The Chronicle’s architecture critic surveys the transformed $300-million science museum which opens today at Pier 15 and finds a “vast utilitarian treasure from 1912” restored and “filled with layers of refined new space.” But the emphatic changes inside the historic pier warehouse aren’t without flaws, in his view.
