Now that the Mercury News is selling its long-reviled, hinterlands newspaper headquarters surrounded by a moat off Interstate 880, count columnist Scott Herhold among those who won’t miss it. He notes that while fond memories remain of his 25 years spent there—much of it in a windowless room—the building itself was always a loser, a strategic goof by the powers-that-be who uprooted the Merc from downtown San Jose in 1967. Says Herhold:
At the age of 46, the Mercury News building has seen better days. It is too big for our current needs. If it were human, it would have a paunch, a bald spot, a bad back.
