Henry Alvarez’s goose appears to be cooked—without pension sauce

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

After looking the other way for months, it appears Mayor Ed Lee has decided to pull the plug on embattled housing authority chief Henry Alvarez. The Chronicle says that the housing authority commission is expected to fire Alvarez when it meets today. If it happens, that could mean he’ll miss out on the pension for life he’s set to earn if he’s still on the payroll April 30.

Not much has materially changed with Alvarez, who’s been criticized for mismanaging the agency and who faces three lawsuits and a trio of investigations. Except, of course, one thing that the mayor’s office may have found too embarrassing to ignore: Alvarez’s recently going on leave claiming he was too ill to work while prepping his new Berkeley restaurant for a May 1 opening.
