Patch mission creep—hyper-local sneaks out of the neighborhood

Thursday, April 11, 2013

Latest sign of mission-stray for Patch, the struggling hyper-local online news network that’s part of the AOL Huffington Post family. Alameda Patch posts a feel-good piece about Giants’ outfielder Hunter Pence overcoming writing anxiety to become a reluctant blogger. Oh, did we mention that the same post runs in the Patch for Berkeley, Concord, Lamorinda, Mill Valley, Palo Alto and . . . well, you get the point.

Here’s the prelude that goes with it:

About this sponsorship: In honor of the 60thanniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Mount Everest, Patch and Grape-Nuts are teaming up to highlight those who inspire people around them to climb their own mountains.

Note: Anytime a neighborhood news outfit serves up a story about a sports star that’s sponsored by a breakfast cereal to supposedly honor Sir Edmund Hillary, there’s gotta be a picture of him.
