Reporter doing 30-day embed in East Oakland police ‘hotspot’

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

I wonder how many people actually buy the “Blu” electronic cigarettes advertised in this window…I aim to find out.

Scott C. Johnson at the Oakland Tribune is settling into a 30-day reporting stint from the streets of East Oakland to give readers a sense of the rhythm of everyday life there. It’s not all about cops and crime. He’s talking to ordinary people about their lives and life in the hood, and will post stories, photos and video snippets of what he encounters, even (as is the case with a couple of folks on International Boulevard) when they’re too video shy to actually talk.

He’s posting to the Tribune, and to the parent Mercury News’ website, as well as to a Tumblr blog called Oakland Hot Spot, which is OPD’s designation for the area where he’s embedded.

The photo at 65th and International Boulevard above is by photographer Jane Tyska, who’ll be working some with Johnson.
