To protect an unfinished, defective and long vacant south San Jose police substation from vandals, they’re keeping it lit up at night, as if someone were actually in the place. It’s a landmark of sorts for motorists heading north on Monterey Road. And today the Mercury News’ Scott Herhold brings taxpayers more bad news: the electricity bill for all that crime-prevention totals $275,000 over the last two years.
