UC Merced, shunned at first, now must turn away students in droves

Here’s a higher education story that’s at once heartening and sad: UC Merced, which opened in 2005 and which critics lambasted as the wrong campus in the wrong place at the wrong time, must now turn away students in record numbers. For the fall semester, more than 17,000 have applied for about 1,600 spots. Chronicle
