It’s no secret that robbery and theft of journalists working in Oakland has become common enough that several TV stations routinely dispatch a security guard when assigning news crews there. Yesterday, however, a new turn in an ongoing challenge: Thieves not only broke the windows of an ABC 7 (KGO) news van while reporter Nick Smith and a photographer were on a story at Jack London Square—they also broke into the team security guard’s car parked across the street. Taken: a cell phone and other personal items. Smith chased the thieves, who got away in a green Jaquar. Chronicle
