Why one Merc columnist will miss San Jose’s iconic Knight Ridder signs

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Scott Herhold of the (MediaNews Group-owned) Mercury News says that he’ll miss the iconic Knight Ridder signs that are coming down from the former newspaper chain’s San Jose headquarters building (from the era when the Merc was a prized Knight Ridder property), while not begrudging the building’s new owners for wanting to change things. An excerpt:

I do lament the passing of a newspaper organization that had the wherewithal to spend money on a sign. And I know San Jose misses a corporate presence that blessed its hopes for remaking its downtown.

The Knight Ridder sign testified to an era of big dreams. Someday, we'll gaze at photos and wonder that it vanished.

Someday?
