Bill Lockyer as governor—what might have been

Thursday, June 6, 2013

Veteran LA Times Sacramento watcher George Skelton opines that Bill Lockyer (pictured with wife Nadia), who announced this week he’ll retire from politics in 2014 having never lost an election in 46 years, would have made a great governor. And had it happened, he says, it would have been great for journos. An excerpt:

He's also candid and, especially earlier in his career, prone to shoot off his mouth.

"I resent your mindless blather," Lockyer once told a female state senator, a fellow Democrat, while chairing a committee.

But as a loose cannon, he never wounded the public. He only nicked himself. Whatever the personal flaws, they didn't harm constituents.
