Undersea trash piles up off California’s coast

Monday, June 10, 2013

Picture of an oil drum on the seafloor in Monterey CanyonThat big beautiful ocean just off our coast—it’s increasingly becoming a huge garbage can. That’s the scary implication from a new study published by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute after scientists there combed through 18,000 hours of underwater video collected by the aquarium’s remotely operated vehicles. National Geographic Daily News blogged about it last week. There’s a (paywalled) Chronicle folo today.

Pictured, a 55-gallon drum at 9,488 feet in the outer Monterey Canyon.
