Caltrans pulls plug on Labor Day Bay Bridge opening; maybe December

Monday, July 8, 2013

It’s official: the Bay Bridge eastern span’s long-anticipated opening will not occur on Labor Day weekend as planned and will be delayed until possibly December. State legislators were informed of Caltrans’ decision this morning. It’s another humiliating blow to Caltrans, and to what is widely believed to be the most expensive bridge ever constructed—at an estimated $6.4 billion.

Officials had said the engineering-plagued bridge would not open unless it was at least as safe as the acknowledged seismically unsafe old span it is meant to replace. So, guess not. Chronicle
