With local media attention focused as much on whether the problem-plagued eastern span of the Bay Bridge will open on Labor Day as it is on what the bumblers at Caltrans are doing to ensure that it’s safe when it does open, there’s now this: Even if the Caltrans brain-trust determined that a so-called quick-fix enables the bridge to open Labor Day weekend, that’s not likely now. Reason: the Metropolitan Transportation Commission would need a couple of weeks notice and that body—consisting mostly of elected officials—has gone on summer break until after Labor Day, the Chronicle says.
