Newspaper start-up to compete against MediaNews Group in SoCal

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

04.kushner.jahLooks like a clash of journalism philosophies is about to play out in Long Beach. Freedom Communications, under new boss Aaron Kushner (pictured, who’s hired lots of journalists and is making exciting things happen at the Orange County Register), is reportedly about to enter the market with a newspaper to compete against MediaNews Group’s the Long Beach Press-Telegram. The latter is a product of the enterprise run by John Paton, the cost-slashing, downsizing, print-is-dying standard bearer whose collection of Southern California papers are organized in a similar way as the Mercury News and its Bay Area “editions.” Long Beach Business Journal says an announcement is imminent.
