The Palo Alto-based Internet search engine was introduced in 1995, three years before Google was founded. But through a succession of corporate owners who treated it as a step-child—including Yahoo, since 2003—Alta Vista couldn’t keep up. Yahoo officially sent it to the Internet bone yard yesterday.
