Twitter goes loony, posts fake tweets linked to real users to promote its ads

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

Are there no adults in charge at Twitter? The company is apologizing for commandeering the names of real users to generate fake tweets to promote an ad scheme that integrates with TV commercials. People are angry. The three words Twitter wants you to hear now: “We’re very sorry.” Uh, sure. An excerpt from The Tech Chronicles blog:

The tweets looked completely real, but SFGate discovered that while the Twitter users who were featured are real, their tweets were not. The users who were portrayed raving about TV commercials actually never said anything of the kind. They were also not informed that their profile pics and accounts were being presented in a post on Twitter’s blog sent out to hundreds of thousands via the @Twitterads Twitter account and retweeted to more than 1.5 million.
