Accused of cheating, Oracle team tries damage control

Friday, August 16, 2013

Could it be any worse for Larry Ellison’s Oracle Team USA? We’ll find out soon. For now, fully two-thirds of its America’s Cup competition (OK, so there are only three other teams) are accusing it of cheating in one of the bigger scandals to afflict the competition ever. Team CEO Russell Coutts is doing his best to counter the criticism, but it’s feeble at best, as in this quote in the Chronicle: “It’s a team with 130 people, and a few people have broken a rule—not linked to management. Is it right to label the whole team ‘cheats’?”
