After getting caught underpaying low level workers, Giants to pay up

Friday, August 30, 2013

Ouch. The Giants organization is being slapped by the U. S. Labor Department for underpaying 74 mostly low-level part-time employees and will fork over $545,000 it owes them. When you bore into the details, it’s pretty unflattering for the wealthy group of folks who own the Giants.

Among the government findings: that the Giants were abusing an arrangement to pay certain employees a flat $55 for working 5.5 hours per day by having those employees work 12 to 15 hours a day. Do the math. That’s a job that looks on paper to be $10 an hour that in some cases at least pays only $3.66 an hour—barely half the $7.25 minimum wage. SF Business Times
