Federal officials have now come aboard in support of a temporary fix to the Bay Bridge eastern span’s bolt problems, raising the possibility that the $6.3 billion span could open after the Labor Day weekend after all. That decision will be made at the state level, but the blessing of the Federal Highway Administration undoubtedly gives Caltrans and Gov. Jerry Brown political cover to go ahead and open the bridge.
